Haldi Ceremony: The yellow of every new beginning.

The wedding season is just around the corner and who doesn’t like to be a part of the pre-wedding ceremonies?

Several pre-wedding ceremonies take place in different parts of India where Haldi is one of the most vibrant and one of the core ceremonies taking place in every region of India. One not only gets to see the shades of yellow but also the emotions of immense love and care which come along while performing the ceremony.

Looking back on history, the Haldi ceremony is one of the most important and the first rituals to be performed during the pre-wedding ceremonies.

What is Haldi?

Just like the Haldi ceremony has different names, the sticky paste has it too. Some call it Ubtan, some Tel Baan, some Mandha, and some, Haldi .

It is a thick paste which is applied to both groom and bride respectively. The sticky paste is a mixture of Haldi (turmeric), milk, rose water, tel (mustard oil), almond powder, Chandan (sandalwood powder), lemon juice, and another doob (grass). The rich yellow colour of the paste and properties of haldi not only makes the skin glow but also considered prosperous for ritual too.

Why Haldi Ceremony?

Looking back to history, the colour “yellow” is considered to be propitious as per Hindu traditions and rituals. It is said that the bright sunny colour is prosperous for the newlyweds who are set to start a new chapter in their life. It is also said that if the paste is applied to unmarried friends or siblings, it brings luck to them in terms of marriage. Back in the time of Rajas and Maharajas, the Haldi ceremony didn’t only take place for the marriage purpose but also for that pre-wedding glow. It is also said that haldi (turmeric) acts as an evil eye protector and repels the evil spirit/ Buri Nazar on the soon-to-be-married bride and groom.

Where’s the Dhool?

In some regions, the Haldi ceremony is about the theme, and in some regions, it is about the music.
For example, in a big fat Punjabi wedding, music plays a major part. It doesn’t only enhance the ceremony but also gathers the family members on the stage.

Conclusion

Haldi ceremony isn’t just about the ritual but also about all the giggles and the memories that one creates before getting married. Where all the family members get together to bless the soon-to-be-married bride and groom.
