Preamble

India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, thanks to the Indian Independence Movement. Through the Indian Independence Act of 1947, India attained its independence. British India was divided into two autonomous Dominions of the British Commonwealth by an act of the UK Parliament; the British Commonwealth later evolved into the Commonwealth of Nations. India didn’t have a permanent constitution, therefore its laws were based on the Government of India Act 1935, a modified colonial act. However, on August 29, 1947, a resolution was passed to create a committee to draught a permanent constitution, with Dr. B R Ambedkar as its head.

A draftt constitution was created and presented to the Constituent Assembly on November 4th, 1947. After minor adjustments and discussions, the assembly of 308 members signed two copies in each of Hindi and English on January 24, 1950, and two days later, on January 26, 1950, it became operative throughout the country. The Indian Union elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad to the position of President. The Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under the transitional provisions of the new Constitution, and as a result, the 26th of January is now observed as Republic Day in India.
