In the summer season every year, the most awaited festival in India is definitely Shivratri. As the name itself suggests, this festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and prayers are offered to Him on this day. Also referred to as Mahashivratri at times(one out of the total of twelve), this festival is highly significant for Hindu devotees. This year, Shivratri is on the 11th of March, which is a Thursday.

Why celebrated?

Behind every festival we celebrate, there is always a connected historical story. The same is the case with this Maagh month festival as per the Hindu calendar. The date is decided as per the full moon and it is believed that on this auspicious day, Sagar Manthan took place.

Truth behind the famous tale

Now, what is this Sagar Manthan after all? As per the mythological stories, Lord Shiva saved the world from getting destroyed by drinking a large quantity of poison and that is why He is so revered. Another tale also suggests that Lord Shiva got married on this day. Whatever be the reason, the Indian community indulges in grand celebrations on this day.

How to celebrate traditionally?

In addition to eating delicacies and the concept of bathing the idol with milk, there are other forms of worship as well. At some places, Shivarchan is performed in which the Shiva Ling is worshipped and laden with fruits and flowers of different varieties. There is also a concert of bhoj, that is distributing food after this ceremony. Kailash is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Owing to this reason, a number of devotees even travel to ancient temples in different parts of the country in the hope of getting their desires fulfilled.

The concept of Fasting
A large number of women along with some men and children also take to fasting on this day. The only food items consumed are fresh fruits. For worshipping purposes, the most significant items are belpatra and dhatoora. This is so because as per popular belief, Lord Shiva is impressed on doing so.

In whichever way people decide to celebrate Shivratri, it is sure to change the atmosphere all around. With huge crowds heading towards temples and Shiv Lingas being decorated, it is purely a heavenly site all across the country. It is worth knowing that some people in Nepal also celebrate this festival while Indians who have settled abroad have taken the legacy there as well.
