Christian Wedding Traditions You need to know

Just like in any other religion, Christian marriage is a holy tradition followed for the unison of two people in love. If we have to compare the Christian wedding to that of an Indian wedding, the ceremony will usually start when the bride enters the church whereas in Indian culture the temple. Christian traditions believe that sexual relations and reproducing children should take place post marriage. Like Indians even they believe that marriage is a bond for a lifetime.

As mentioned the wedding ceremony begins when the bride enters the church. The bride often wears a white dress which symbolizes purity. For many years the white gown’s tradition has been followed and we can see variations in the design but the color remains the same.

In a heterosexual couple, a ritual of giving away the bride to the groom takes place. It used to be a symbol of gifting the bride to the groom by the bride’s father, but with the changing time, it is more of a sentimental symbol.

The priest or minister will commence the wedding. A moment of silence is practiced to remember the elderly that have passed away. The minister will say the names of those who have passed at the top of the ceremony to welcome their presence into space. The wedding ceremony will be different in different beliefs.

However, Christian weddings have readings from the Bible. The passages will be chosen according to the couple and then the importance of the marriage is discussed and the couple is guided on the correct path. In most weddings, the couple lights candles to represent the blessings of Jesus to guide them as a couple throughout their marriage. The most important ritual in their ceremony is an exchange of vows and rings. Vows can be customized by the couple if they wish to do so, or they could use the traditional vows.

The traditional vows are as follows:

‘I, (name), take you, (name),
to be my wife,
to have and to hold
from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death us do part;
according to God’s holy law.
In the presence of God, I make this vow.

After the vows are completed, the rings are exchanged. There is a person amongst the guests who carry the rings and is called the ring bearer. These rings are circular and minimalistic, which denotes forever just like the circular shape has no start or end, their bond should stay forever.

After the wedding ceremony is complete, the couple hosts a meal and a party. This party is called reception.
