These celebrations, which transcend the boundaries of faith and language, are what bind the nation together. Although the Pongal festival is mostly observed in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India, it is observed in other parts of the nation as well. India celebrates its harvest at the Pongal festival. The harvest for the season is being honoured. On this day, garbage from agriculture as well as outdated household items and other items are burned in a bonfire. Bhogi Mantalu is the name of the bonfire. In Tamil Nadu, these bonfires can be seen in the squares and yards of towns, villages, and urban areas. Wood and dried cow dung are used to fuel the fires. In the northern regions of India, the Holika Dahan tradition is comparable to the Bhogi Mantalu tradition. Science may have contributed to the development of this practise because burning the outdated materials offered a practical means of disposing of garbage. Indra, the God of Rain, is also honoured on the day of Bhogi Pongal in remembrance of the rain that enabled a bountiful harvest.

Second Day: Surya Pongal or Thai Pongal

The primary event of the Pongal Festival is considered to be the Surya Pongal or Thai Pongal, which is celebrated on the second day. It coincides with Makara Sankranti, a holiday that is extensively observed throughout India, and is the first day of the Tamil calendar month Thai. When the sun enters the Makara zodiac sign on this day, which is devoted to the Hindu God Surya (Sun), the Uttarayana season officially begins (Capricorn). On Thai Pongal, people adorn the entryway of their homes with vibrant Kolams and decorate them with banana or mango leaves. Freshly harvested rice grains, milk, and jaggery are used to make the distinctive sweet dish known as “Pongal,” which is cooked in a traditional clay pot. The dish is allowed to boil and overflow out of the pot, signifying their wish for greater fortunes in the coming year. It is customary to tie a turmeric plant or flower garland to the pot before offering it to the Sun.

Third Day: Mattu Pongal

The third day, which is referred to as Mattu Pongal, honours cows and their sanctity.
