Christmas, commonly referred to as the “Feast day of Christ,” is observed annually on December 25. The occasion commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians over the world rejoice at this event, which is observed as a holy holiday. The season of preparations for Christmas is known as ‘Advent’, and starts on a Sunday about four weeks before the festival.

The main holiday in the early years of Christianity was Easter; nobody honoured Jesus’ birth. Church leaders made the decision to make the birth of Jesus a holiday in the fourth century. The date of his birth is not, however, mentioned in the Bible. Some historians speculate that Jesus might have been born in the spring. Julius I, the pope, choose December 25. The church is thought to have chosen this day in an effort to assimilate and incorporate the customs of the paganic Saturnalia festival (a holiday in honour of Saturn, the god of agriculture). The tradition, originally known as the Feast of the Nativity, reached Egypt in 432 and England by the end of the sixth century.

Etymology of Christmas

The word Christmas is derived from two English words, ‘Christ’ and ‘Mass’ in which ‘Christ’ means ‘Christian’ and ‘mass’ means ‘people’. The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life.

Origins of Santa Claus?

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back to a monk named Saint Nicholas, who was born in Turkey around 280 AD. Having donated all his inheritance, St. Nicholas travelled the countryside to help the poor and sick, and became known as the protector of children and sailors.

St. Nicholas first appeared in American popular culture in late 18th-century New York, when Dutch families celebrated the death anniversary of “Sint Nicholas” (Dutch for St. Nicholas), or “Sinter Klaas” for short. It was when we got together. “Santa Claus” comes from this abbreviation.
